Concept Sketch #3
This image demonstrates the underlying idea of the different layering of the systems of the site over time. It begins with looking at the void that the river makes between the river's edge and the more linear urban fabric of homestead. The vertical and horizontal relationships are also explored in looking at the steep slope relating to the great topographic variations in Pittsburgh and how the buildings will engage this. Lastly. looking at revitalization of a business district or a main street will complete the layering in an attempt to create a cohesive whole. Social, physical, and environmental conditions are all studied in this analysis to break down the research into different components before they are brought back together.

I really like your idea of the river acting as a void that engages the urban fabric of homestead. What kindof things were you thinking about when looking at the vertical and horizontal relationships? What part of the social, physical and environmental realm do you think with effect your decisions about site and possible locations?
ReplyDeleteLiz,
ReplyDeleteThis is the beginning of a fairly solid thesis topic. Now make it a proposal: what is your methodology? How will an understanding of these layers produce architecture? Is there something inherent to the process of layering that teases out information or moments that otherwise may have remained unnoticed?
Layering is a design operation. It is a specific move, that is affected by what you choose to input, and how you choose to layer. Be conscious of your agency, and deploy it with purpose.
